Prohibitions in Ihram

Top Prohibitions in Ihram You Must Know Before Umrah

The first step of spiritual preparation at Makkah starts with Ihram, which marks the beginning of your Umrah rituals. You must first visit the Miqat to perform your bath before wearing your simple Ihram clothing. If you’re traveling by plane, this can be done at home or before boarding.

The state of ihram requires you to keep away from specific actions until your pilgrimage is completed. You must avoid these activities to preserve your spiritual purity, humility, and focus, as these qualities make your Umrah acceptable to Allah.

This article focuses on the essential prohibitions that must be avoided during Ihram. Whether you’re preparing for your first Umrah or simply want deeper knowledge.

Top Prohibitions to Avoid in Ihram

Ulama call these prohibitions “Prohibitions of Ihram”, which are divided into three categories:

  1. Prohibitions of ihram for both men and women
  2. Additional prohibitions for men
  3. Additional prohibitions for women

Prohibitions Of Ihram For Both Men And Women

  • Cutting or Shaving Hair

Cutting or shaving hair is not permitted in the state of Ihram. Early hair trimming or shaving during the Ihram status violates Islamic rules, which may result in penalties. So, it must be done only after you complete the main rituals of Umrah.

  •  Nail Trimming

Nail trimming in the Ihram is not allowed for both men and women. You must avoid cutting your nails until you complete your Umrah rituals.

This rule shows both religious discipline and self-restraint. It is recommended to trim your nails before wearing the Ihram or after completing Umrah.

  • Hunting Animals

Killing or hunting animals is strictly forbidden in the sacred state of Ihram. You must show mercy to all creatures, reflecting the spirit of peace and compassion. Only harmful animals, like snakes or scorpions, can be killed for safety.

  • Perfume Usage

It is not allowed to use perfume or any fragrance in the state of Ihram. But if you apply fragrance before wearing the Ihram and the smell remains, it doesn’t count as breaking the rule.

  • Sexual Activities

Pilgrims are required to stay away from all sexual activity, even discussing it, while wearing ihram. This period is for deep spiritual connection, not worldly desires.

Following this rule shows respect for Allah. It helps you stay honest, keeps you focused on worship. It reminds you of the true purpose of the pilgrimage.

  • Marriage or Proposal

It is prohibited for you in ihram to get married, to negotiate a marriage for another person, or to make a marriage proposal until you’ve completed your Umrah.

Additional Prohibitions For Men

  • Wearing Stitched or Tailored Clothes

Male pilgrims in Ihram state must avoid wearing sewn garments including shirts and trousers, or underwear. The two plain white unstitched fabrics function as attire that covers both the upper body and the lower body of the person. This simple white dress promotes equality, humility, and devotion during the pilgrimage.

  • Covering the Head or Face

According to Islamic customs, men must keep their heads and faces uncovered by any headwear such as hats, caps, or turbans. The religious requirement demonstrates both respect and simplicity toward Allah. It is acceptable to use a sunshade or umbrella to protect from the sun.

Additional Prohibitions For Women

  • Covering the Face

In the Ihram(burqa), women are not allowed to wear a niqab as the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade it. Women must keep their faces exposed however, they can cover their faces when non-mahram men walk near them.

  • Hand Covering

Women in Ihram don’t cover their hands, even though it’s usually encouraged in prayer. The purpose of this rule is to maintain simplicity and equality rather than to diminish modesty practices. Everyone in Ihram leaves behind extra coverings and focuses purely on worship, showing humility and devotion to Allah during Umrah.

Summary

Following the rules of Ihram helps you stay focused, pure, and connected to Allah during your Umrah. These simple actions show your respect and love for this holy journey. Observing the prohibited actions enhances the value and acceptance of your Umrah experience. Whether it’s your first time or not, knowing these rules matters.
